Fioricet is a brand name of headache pain medication used for treating tension headaches resulting from contracted muscles. Fioricet has also found use with migraines and other pains. It is formulated by combining three key ingredients: acetaminophen, Butalbital and caffeine. Acetaminophen works to reduce fever and relieve pain. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, relaxing muscular spasms in the cerebral vascular system to increase blood flow. Butalbital is a barbiturate with a general depressant effect that helps relieve tension headache by relaxing muscle contractions. Fioricet may be prescribed for children over 12 but has not been sufficiently tested for safe use by children under 12. Consult your physician before taking any OTC cough, allergy, cold or menstrual pain medications. While you are taking Fioricet, avoid consuming alcohol. The risk of liver damage will be compounded by alcohol combined with the acetaminophen contained in Fioricet.

The person Fioricet is prescribed for should be the only person to take it. It should not be shared with any one, especially a person who may have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Store the medication in a safe place where no one else can get to it. If you have allergies to caffeine, acetaminophen or Butalbital do not take Fioricet.

Your doctor needs to be aware of any conditions such as porphyria, kidney disease, cirrhosis or liver disease, drug allergies or a history of suicidal thoughts or mental illness. If you consume in excess of three alcoholic beverages a day, your doctor will most likely not prescribe Fioricet due to the associated risk of liver damage. If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or are a nursing mother, do not take Fioricet.

Always follow the instructions on the prescription exactly. Until you know how you will react to Fioricet, avoid driving or operating machinery as it may cause extreme drowsiness. If side effects such as nausea, uneven heartbeat, shortness of breath, chills, bruising and bleeding, dizziness, anxiety or headache occur, stop taking the medication and call your doctor.
