Prescription vs. Over the Counter Wrinkle Creams

If you have had skin problems or have noticed your skin has taken on a tired look, you may be wondering whether you need professional help. The answer to this depends greatly on the amount of damage your skin has suffered. If the only problem you are having is a few worry lines or crows feet, you probably do not need medical attention. If the damage is causing the appearance of acne, severe wrinkling, discoloration and other flaws, more drastic treatment is a possibility, but not necessarily required. In fact, nearly the only time medical treatment is imperative is if you suffer pain or other kinds of discomfort because of a rash, skin condition or serious damage.
I know you may be wondering how I can say that. Well, quite simply because it is true. Many people who choose to see a doctor to deal with minor issues are given the same skin and wrinkle creams that are available over the counter. Very few prescription wrinkle creams contain actual medications. In fact, in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration does not even conduct studies on wrinkle creams unless they believe they may pose a problem.
Because most prescription wrinkle creams contain higher concentrations of various chemicals, they must be monitored. This does not mean that you can treat yourself by purchasing over the counter wrinkle creams and using a double dose. This act is called self medicating and is never a good idea. If you need a prescription dosage, see a doctor. They will know exactly what strength your body can tolerate. A doctor will also be able to better assist you in the case of a negative reaction if they know the actual quantity you have used.
If you do not feel that your skin is badly damaged, consider using an over the counter wrinkle cream first.
Find a wrinkle cream of good quality. This can be judged by the ingredients. Good wrinkle creams will contain only ingredients that are found naturally in our body, or found in nature, and needed for our body to function properly. This will include ingredients like fatty or amino acids, vitamins, collagen builders and plant derivatives that promote healing. Additionally make sure that the base consists of natural moisturizers like coco butter or natural oils like grape seed oil and avocado oil. These will continuously moisturize without damaging your skin the way artificial ingredients can.
It is absolutely critical that you read the label on over the counter wrinkle creams. Many advertise all natural ingredients but fall short of delivering the promise. Also, some people may find that they are allergic to some ingredients. Avoid allergens at all cost. This can not only damage your skin but also cause an unnecessary doctors visit. If the allergy is severe enough serious problems could arise. Be safe, not sorry, and check the label before purchasing.
If you do have an adverse reaction or the wrinkle cream is not doing what it should do, seek medical attention. This may be a sign that your skin has more damage than you thought. It may also be a sign that you have a serious skin condition causing your problems rather than just normal damage. Remember that the fact that simple conditions do not require doctor attention does not mean your cosmetic aisle is a replacement for the knowledge a doctor has.
Learning the differences between harmless signs of aging and skin damage and more serious skin conditions can save you a great deal of money. Not only will you not be paying the doctor’s bill, but you will also avoid the cost of expensive prescriptions. However, admit to yourself when things are beyond your control and seek proper help. Doing these thing will keep both your skin and your wallet in good condition.
