Recognize that government invasion of public power is eventually an assault upon your own business. If some among you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping he’ll eat you last. --Ronald Reagan

There are many conservative Wisconsin web logs. I hope that this blog will be a little different.
First, this blog will not, as a general rule, cover national politics or national issues. Instead, I plan to focus on state and local government. Voters can most directly affect policies on those levels, and voters most often ignore those levels of government although they usually have the greatest impact on our lives.
Second, this blog will, as another general rule, deal only with fiscal issues, property rights and good government (with an occasional commentary on what is right and wrong with the GOP). Abortion, guns, gay marriage, the First Amendment, foreign policy and the myriad of other issues that fill other blogs are all important. However, other bloggers as well as the mainstream media cover those issues, and the debate over those issues often overshadows the issues dealt with on this site.
Wisconsin government has become too big and too corrupt. Government taxes, spends and regulates too much. It pushes away too many jobs. And it has too little respect for private property rights.
I intend to be an equal opportunity critic. Democrats and Republicans deserve their share of the blame almost equally. Republicans, while their words are often right, do not use the opportunities presented to make things better.
I also intend to recognize those elected officials and others in government who work to protect taxpayers. Yes, there are too few qualified public servants. Yes, conservative victories happen all too infrequently. But conservatives drive other conservatives from serving by failing to recognize when someone does something right. There are victories and good compromises, and there are courageous officials. They deserve recognition.

That's right, Christopher Sholes. He is the inventor of the modern typewriter and the layout of the keypad. It does not sound like much, but he changed the world. What would we do without him?
